If you have not had a chance to stop by and try one of Steve’s Hot Dogs, you are missing out on some great local food. A simple hot dog can make your day better and just for today Steve’s is giving away free hot dogs to anyone named “Steve” legally. Other restrictions and conditions apply to getting that free hot dog. We stopped by a few weekends ago to try something quick when stopped into our local grow store. Steve’s is located in Tower Grove at 3145 South Grand Boulevard St. Louis MO. There is also another location at 17089 N Outer 40 Rd Ste 140 Chesterfield MO.
I picked up the Hoosier Lover (Pork Steak Dog) that comes with tender shredded pork steak, coleslaw, Steve’s honey chipotle BBQ sauce, and fried onions. This dog is loaded with flavor and comes on a soft hot dog bun. You can always add more condiments and toppings, but why? The dog has a nice snap to it. The sauce had a small kick to it but was sweet enough to offset the spice. It is not a runny sauce which kept if from making the bun soggy. Having a soggy bun is up there on one of the things that will keep me from eating a hot dog. The pork steak was well seasoned and I did not come across a piece of gristle or glob of fat.
Vanna kept it simple with ketchup, mustard, and sweet pickle relish. The bun does complement the dog well if you have toppings on it. I don’t know if I would like it as much if it was a plain dog. The fries were lightly salted with the standard crinkle cut. Fries were not remarkable. Maybe they would have paired well with some toppings that they offered.
We went to the location in Tower Grove. They had just replaced the door and windows from a recent attack by a vandal. The person responsible for the damage was caught. Even during this period of repair Steve’s kept with the St. Louis theme. A local artist name “Eyez” was hired to decorate the plywood covering the damaged windows. The boards were still in the building when we got our food. There are plaques and pictures of the awards Steve himself received along with “The Urge.” It is a cool place to eat at for the history on the walls.
All together it was not bad for a quick place to get food. They are having a celebration for his birthday August 12th and are giving away certain hot dogs for people named Steve or a derivative there of. You just need a driver’s license or ID showing your name.
