Cheap, Hot, and Fast – Shack Breakfast and Lunch

Sometimes you just want something quick and simple to eat without having to wait a long time, or having to hope the food is hot. It’s always nice when you can find a place that meets that balance. While Vanna was having a procedure done, I had quite a bit of free time during the mid-morning. I was not looking for fast food that would more than likely be close to being old due to restaurants getting ready to switch to their lunch menus.

So while in the parking lot waiting I pull up maps and search for a place close with no long wait for service. Sometimes Google Maps comes in handy, like when they list how busy a place is at certain times. Yes Google is tracking you even with certain things turned off on your phone. I walk in and was seated right away at a table on the right side of the restaurant. The host leaves the menu and returns with a glass of cold water. The water taste like it was filtered and not just chilled tap water. If you are going to serve water in a restaurant, it has to be filtered and not just tap water. The waitress comes over to get my food and drink choice. I went for the Black Ice coffee($5.99) and Protein Power Bowl ($13.99).

I had just placed my order and was getting ready to work on another article when my Black Ice coffee arrived. If you needed a kick in the morning this will do it! It comes iced with the sweet cold foam on the top. You can add sweeteners to it if needed. It comes a little bitter from the cold brew coffee. When trying something new, I try to get it as close to the original way it was made. I get back to starting up the surface pro and would you look at that!? Here comes my Protein Power Bowl. I picked scrambled eggs since it was a bowl with grains. Makes it a little easier to get a sample of all the flavors of the dish.

One thing I was not expecting was the lack of seasoning on the eggs and quinoa. The bell peppers were crisp and fresh. The sausage that came with the bowl did hold up well against the guacamole included in the dish. They did give you a lot of food and it was hot. They give you hot sauce and other condiments to season the dish as you would like. After adding hot sauce and some salt, it gave the quinoa some life.

The restaurant is decked out in a barn like decor that makes it feel more like a “Shack.” It was lit at a low level with big front windows providing most of the light for the room. Service was excellent and my glass was never empty.

If you are looking for a quick bite to eat, this might be the place for you. Just be ready to season some of the food. They do offer a gluten free menu and you can also order take out. They have a few locations in the St. Louis area.
